Hello, World!

I am very excited to announce the launch of our Imagine Cup 2014 season and share the news that registration is now officially open! We've been working on plans for this season since January, believe it or not, and I can't believe we're finally here. We have some great new contests for you and a lot of cool stuff to share.

Before we dive in though, I want you to know that the Imagine Cup team is constantly looking for ways to bring more and better opportunities to you, so you can learn new tools and build your skills by competing in the Imagine Cup. This season is focused on helping you learn the key steps involved in creating a project and bringing it to market, and offers many levels of participation. Whether you only want to participate in one of our online challenges, or you’re looking to go all the way with an Imagine Cup competition, we’re here to support you!

Many students have gone on to create successful products and businesses after getting their start with Imagine Cup. If you've never participated in Imagine Cup before, I hope you’ll be inspired by what some past Imagine Cup competitors have gone on to accomplish:

We have some great new opportunities for you and a lot of cool new stuff to share, so let’s dive in!

New Look

How about our new website and logo? We decided the time had come to update our look and I'm thrilled with the result. We have some new features at our website that I hope you'll all enjoy, including comments on articles like this one, better team and user profiles, and a new submission upload system. We want to build and support our community of students and technology enthusiasts here at our site and these are some important steps in that direction.

Competitions

Our three main competitions are back for 2014: Games, Innovation, and World Citizenship. And once again the prizes are substantial: $50,000 to the first-place team in each competition! All of our rules for 2014 are available now and there are a lot of changes, so please take a look.

On
e big change is that our dozens of National Finals held around the world in early 2014 will choose a winner in each of their competitions who will be designated World Semifinalists. We will spotlight every one of those World Semifinalist teams here on our website as each National Final concludes and then starting in May, all 200+ World Semifinalist teams will enter an online round here at our website. In that round our judges will determine the teams who win a trip to Seattle to compete in person at the 2014 World Finals in late July. We'll have a lot more to say about the World Semifinalist round in a few months so stay tuned.

And if your country isn't holding a National Finals, don't worry: we will run an Online Finals here at our website and any team without a National Final in their country can compete there instead.

Challenges

Every year at Imagine Cup we offer a variety of online challenges and they tend to change from year to year. This year we're retiring the three technology-based ones from 2013 and are instead kicking off three new ones, the first of which has now started! This year at Imagine Cup we want to help you get your project off the ground early and with the right planning. None of these challenges require any programming at all. Instead, they are to help you get started with the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC)

Our online challenges include:

  • Pitch Video Challenge (September-October): Record a three to five minute video with your team pitching your project!
  • Project Blueprint Challenge (November-December): Dig deep into your thinking and deliver a written project proposal covering your users, requirements, scenarios, and business model.
  • User Experience Challenge (January-February): How will people actually use your software? A great user experience transforms any solution so show us your user flow, wireframes, and a visual target for how your software will look on screen.
Your team can compete in any, all, or none of the challenges as you wish. They aren't required for our main competitions. But if your team does compete in these challenges, I expect your project will be substantially stronger as a result.

Our challenges use our standard competition categories: Games, Innovation, and World Citizenship. You can change categories from challenge to challenge if you like and it doesn't lock you into a specific competition for your main project.

For each challenge, the top team in each category will win $3,000! In addition, the top ten teams in each category will be honored as Challenge All-Stars. All of these winners will receive exclusive Imagine Cup lapel pins for team members as well as certificates of victory and they will be celebrated here on our website for the entire Imagine Cup community to congratulate.

Our Pitch Video Challenge is now underway so please check it out and get started on your submission!

love this new style of logo and i dunno what this contest about so please explain :)

Brandy Pepper Fri, 13 Sep 2013
@prakash, thank you for the feedback! Imagine Cup is Microsoft's global student technology competition. You can build an app/game and compete in one of our 3 big competitions (see competition section in John's blog above for more details) or learn more about the software development life cycle through our global online challenges (see challenge section above). Does that help?

Hi , I want to ask about the official rules as I need more clarification on the section of the copywrites as I am designing a program and I used scientific values which were published in articles which of course are copyrighted materials so would this be an issue !
