    hi friends,

does any body have an idea whether herbert is coming back for round 1 or not..? i wanted to keep a session on imagine cup and herbert in my campus, so i wanted to know if it's coming up this time too!

oh! but Brian was telling it would be something different this time right? Herbert is indeed great but is there something greater coming up ;) let's hope for the best.

and i also hope the Robotics doesnt have anything to do with the theoretical algorithm competition we've been having till now! hope it is just there to add spice to the name of this invitational!

theory is something that you do not put into practice...

in every round so far we had to make our algorithms work.

so far this has been the only way to keep the competition objective

    Re: Is herbert coming back?

that is a good point but IMHO theory is something that has the potential to be put into practice and in fact almost always is put into practice. it is indeed great to watch the algorithms being put into practice in the form of Robotics and stuff but developing the algorithms for them which enables them to be as fast and less memory consuming is essential which we must be proud to be good/striving to be good at and which is what the competition has been doing till now whether it is to keep it objective or whatever.

in fact in the second round we did not have to bother about VB/C# language concepts at all. just the utilities it provided which were quite great and algorithmic programming is all what was needed. i personally like it this way though ofcourse different people have different interests.

As I remember, Brian (aka Brain) mentioned that this year we could have one new game in first round, beside Herbert. And that competitors could choose between these two. But that was just something like one idea, so who knows.

Having teams is a really bad idea because it makes impossible to create fair problems for the finals.  So if we really want teams, I'd say that we should go for 4 persons per team and have extremely complicated problems.

And don't compare it to PH where teams bring their own code and changes for the finals are usually minimal (the exception is last year) while in algorithms people need every minute out of those 24h. This year If I remember correctly, everyone was still coding having 20 minutes left. And with only 2 minutes 3 guys were still coding - but I guess it's mine fault :)

I agree with Psho but my fear is that this competition will be totally different from Algo!

    Re: Is herbert coming back?

what do u mean by fair problems? what do u think what is a fair problem? I don't think anything would be unfair if there would be teams with 2 persons, especially cuz i think it will be much more complex than algo was .. while i do think 4 persens per team and extremely complicated problems are not the perfect choice... however i strongly aggree with richard, definitely it will be a totally new/different invitational... so all in all, it's hard to say anything while we don't know the exact rules, but in advance i wouldn't say that make it to a team invitational is a really bad idea..

     thoughts?

Yeee, Microsoft should have charged u with the costs of all energy drinks that competitiors drunk :]

I want algorithms the same they were till now. I dont care that for several billion people its seems unattractive :P.

And if its going to be changed ;( I vote for 2 members teams - for one it may be too difficult, and 3-4 is a crowd :P.

I vote for 3-4 members: One team like Psyho, Roman, Gribok,..  And nobody stop us.
