     Mr. Heikel, Out of Google Earth and MS Virtual Earth which one would be more suitable for this competition?

    It is not appropriate for me to provide my opinion on how you should develop your application. If you use any third party solutions as part of your application you should do your own research and pick the solution that is best for you. There is never any bias to using a Microsoft tool versus a non-Microsoft tool unless explicitly mentioned in the rules that you must use a specific application.

    Tim. I am totally new to Microsoft Technology, Visual Studio, Microsoft Earth software etc for one reason: the Microsoft World is propriatory, plus it might cost me hundreds of dollars for their product licensing for me to start working. My college uses open source alternatives(greater support, community help). I make use of GPL non-propriatory technologies such as Java, MySQL, SVG, HTML etc. I can do about anything from Mobile Programming to gaming software and rich Internet-desktop apps. Why is then that Microsoft wont let me use this tech to develop a system that is meant to benefit the world, GPL make it possible for non-licencing and non expensive solutions that may be embrace by many.

    I want to participate in the Imagine Cup 2009, i really do, i am dying to, but Microsoft's main goal is to promote its software and platforms (paying licenses for usage) no doubt in that respect.

    Required Elements

    • Implementation or consumption of a XML Web Service;
    • .NET Framework 2.0 or later;
    • Visual Studio family (Express, Standard, Professional, or Team System) for development

    Optional Elements

    Sure Microsoft wants to promote their products, they are a business afterall, but they are not blind to the fact that there are other great platforms out there. Last year there was an Interoperability award where entries were required to integrate other platforms. Keep watching the site, it may return.

    You don't have to spend money to participate, there are free versions of all of the software listed in your email, ie Visual Studio Express, SQL Express, etc.

    Also, Microsoft is also very sensitive to the limited budgets of students which is why they built Dream Spark. Are you aware of Dream Spark which provides free software to students? It is new so it doesn't yet encompass every country and every school worldwide, but it includes many, many countries and hundreds of schools, and more are added all the time. If your school is included there may be lots of free software available to you. Check it out, go to dreamspark.com and sign up to see if your school is included.

    As mentioned by Tim, you have all ways to develop your solution with MS Prods/technos for free.

    Open sources platforms, applications are developped by communities, passionated guys....The MS Products are developped for business. It's exactly the same thing with big companies such as IBM, Oracle, Google....

    I have just one advice, try to develop your solution with applications provided by the Dream Spark program and you will see how it s good, easy to develop great things!

    Good luck and please join the competition :)
